Lean On Me essays

Lean On Me essays In the movie, Lean on Me East Side High School was labeled a "cauldron of violence." After the school was designated the harsh term, Joe Clark a African American male became the head principal and changed the school around. Lean on Me is a story of hope, development, love, hate, and dependence. Mr. Clark was looked at as a father figure, friend, strict, with a harsh attitude who helped heal, strengthen, and bring to life a struggling high school in New Jersey. Lean on Me is a moving and powerful movie, but I want to discuss the deeper real personality of Joe Clark and how he treated others. First, Joe Clark got the name Crazy Joe but he did not get the name out of the blue. In the movie he was a violent, angry, and was set in his own ways and beliefs. His wife left him and the one friend he had was his reflective signs of horrendous behavior. He walked around the school with a baseball bat, rather than a clipboard or briefcase. The fear that he earned is more prevalent than the respect that the students and teachers have for him. He liked to be known as "HNIC" the "head nigger in charge." His absurd manners were strongly disliked by his fellow colleagues. He insulted teachers in front of the students and fired them when they did comply with his harsh rules. The first disturbing aspect of this movie is Joe Clarks personality; although he changes around the school, he does it in a bizarre and vicious manner. Another bizarre aspect of the movie is how the director, portrays East Side High. After there is a time change from the 60s to the 80s, East Side transformed from a nice, well-kept, and clean school to a graffiti filled, prison like, school that resembles an alleyway, not a high school. There are fights in the hallway and the bathrooms every time class lets out. I would say East Side is portrayed as a rundown and scary learning high school. For one person, set alone to lead and turn the school around in under a y...

Name that festive tune - Emphasis

Name that festive tune Name that festive tune Oh, jingle bells! Under the influence of one too many eggnog-laced espressos, weve only gone and rewritten verses from three popular Christmas songs in almost impenetrable management speak. Passive constructions? Tautology? Unnecessarily long words? Latin? Oh yes. Can you translate these tunes back to their original festive format? Email us your answers once youve deciphered them. The first five people with the correct songs will win a copy of the book My Grammar and I (or should that be Me?) And, from everyone at Emphasis: it is our fondest desire that you experience a convivial festive period. We really mean it. 1 The decrepitation of Castanea sativa on an unenclosed conflagration The arctic impingement of Jokul Frosti on ones proboscis The harmonising of a choral ensemble on festive canticles And citizens attired in the accoutrement of the Inuit. 2 Im experiencing a reverie in which I behold a Yuletide that is niveous In all ways identical to those I was familiar with at some point prior to today During which time the uppermost parts of foliage scintillated And pre-pubescent juveniles gave attention To perceive tintinnabulation amongst crystalline water ice. 3 The Ilex aquifolium and the Hedera helix At the exact moment that they have advanced to their maximum dimension Taking into account the entire scope of flora to be found in the thicket It is atop the Ilex aquifolium that the coronet is borne.

Effectiveness of NGO'S in Haiti Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Effectiveness of NGO'S in Haiti - Research Paper Example occupations (twice), brutal dictatorship, and militaries), which have contributed to the worsening of the public infrastructure and pervasive poverty within the country. 80% of the Haiti lives below the poverty line, a situation that remains aggravated by wide income inequality. It is widely approximated that NGOs operating within Haiti numbers around 3000 to as high as 10,000. Aid groups usually avail close to four-fifths of social services, and NGOs may account for close to 25% of the GDP (Schwartz 235). One of the most memorable leaders who have played a remarkable role in the country’s history is Aristide, who was ousted out of power in a coup by General Cedras Raoul in February 2004. In particular, the government is left without the capacity to fight poverty or address the country’s most harmful impacts such as education and health, entrusting most of these functions to international NGOs (Schwartz 236). Introduction Haiti is heavily aid dependent as the country ca nnot execute majority of the key functions of government inclusive of operations, and maintenance or the delivery of core public services devoid of foreign aid expertise and funding. A prominent reason for Haiti’s over-reliance on aid and the subsequent negligible impact draws from the series of corrupt, incompetent governments (Schwartz 235). Systemic corruption has been highlighted that the most prominent obstacle facing successful reconstruction and development of Haiti. This thesis analyses of the impact of NGOs effectiveness on Haiti development (economic, social, and political). I argue that the bulk of NGOs in Haiti has not been effective in discharging their mandate owing to absence of accountability and coordination (Kivland 248a). 1.2 Statement of Research Problem Most Haitians are very poor, living on less than $2 a day, a situation that has been worsened by the inability of the Haitian government to provide basic services such as health care and education (Buss 25 6). The UN approximated that international donors awarded Haiti more than $1.6 billion in relief aid since 2010 (close to $155 per Haitian) and more than $2 billion in recovery aid (close to $173 per Haitian), yet despite the massive aid, Haiti appears as if the earthquake happened less than four months ago (Johnston and Main 3). Close to half a million individuals remain homeless habited within hundreds on informal camps, and the bulk of the debris from destroyed buildings still remain on the streets, and cholera, a preventable disease is increasingly becoming an epidemic annihilating thousands and sickening hundreds. It is apparent that roughly none of the money that the public perceived was going to Haiti went directly to Haiti. The international community selected to sidestep the Haitian people, government of Haiti, and Haitian non-governmental organizations, whereby the funds were rather diverted to other governments, private entities, and international NGOs (Haggerty 25). One of the reasons given for the donors not dealing directly with NGOs rather than the government is the perception of widespread corruption in Haiti (Gurt 10). Overall, progress has been extremely low in all ways, a situation that can be attributed to ineffectiveness and lack of accountability in the channeling of donor funds and implementing projects. The question of accountability

Legal Foundations of Health Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Legal Foundations of Health Care - Essay Example Progress in health care facilities was also significant and began immediately into the century. The developments began in the year 1903 with Willem’s invention of electrocardiograph, a development that facilitated diagnosis and therapies. The â€Å"first basal metabolism apparatus† in 1906 was another development in the industry (Pozgar, 2012, p. 9). The â€Å"Wassermann test† followed this in the same year before invention of the â€Å"fluoroscopic screen† two years later. Tests on functionality of the pancreas were also developed by the year 1906. The progression in facilities also included equipments for taking blood based tests and tests on other body fluids as well as development of health care laboratories (Pozgar, 2012). Developments was further realized in establishment of training facilities for health care personnel, as was the case of the Foundation of the American College of Surgeons, in the year 1913. Progress in health care facilities however slugged after the year 1929 because of effects of the First World War and the Great Depression but was later facilitated by profit-oriented ventures in the health care sector. Computerization was another development in the period and was realized towards the end of the 20th century. Its features were vested in healthcare technology such as â€Å"computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography† (Pozgar, 2012, p. 10). These developments in medical technologies have also been the major identified elements of progression in the 21st century. The progression has adopted the developed trend in towards the end of the 20th century when care providers sought to resolve existing and emerging problems in the society and to a ttain efficiencies in their operations. Other developments in healthcare facilities in the period include development of antibiotics and equipments for managing infections, development of pharmaceutical products, establishment and

Teams in Organizations.Group dynamics for teams Essay Example for Free

Teams in Organizations.Group dynamics for teams Essay Teams in Organizations Introduction            Teams are important part of any given organization or company. There are a lot of benefits which companies can realize from their teams which include sharing of work load as well as sharing of ideas in the company leading to increased innovation within an organization. In every organization, there are various departments depending on the type of operations which are carried out within the organization (Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). The number of departments will influence the type of teams and the number of teams that an organization will have. Furthermore, the composition of the teams will depend on the number of people within the departments. It is important to have teams within organizations since there is a lot of benefit which can be generated from having teams as part of operations in the company, hence the view presented by Tom Peters is agreeable. Impacts of Teams in Companies/Organizations            It has been noted that there are various benefits which can be realized as a result of having teams within companies and organizations. As Tom Peters, (1987, p296) insisted, there is need to organize and have teams that are focused in achieving specified objectives and goals within organizations. The benefits or impacts of teams in organizations and companies include: Increased Productivity            Productivity is an important part that companies strive to achieve. Every company often strives to attain high productivity and hence increase its sales in the long run and therefore more profits. When an organization is organized in form of teams that work together in collaboration, it becomes easy for the company to attin high productivity since the teams are able to share the workload and therefore produce more(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). When there is increased productivity as a result of teamwork, it means that there are increased chances of making more profits and meeting the objectives and goals of the company. Therefore, it is important that organizations should be organized in teams Maximization of resources            The other benefit which has been noted through research is that of increased maximization of the resource which are available within the company. When the company is organized in to teams, it is easy to manage how the resources of the organization are being used hence ensure that there is maximum use of the resources for the greater benefit of the company. Furthermore, it has been noted that when an organization is organized in to teams, there is ease in the allocation of the resources of the company (Levi, 2011). It is easy to formulate budgets which can be sued by each teams hence the resource of the company are allocated according to the budgets that he team provides. This ensures that there is proper control on the resources of the company. What this means is that there is no wastage of the resources within the company. Therefore, it is important to have teams within an organization or company. Accountability            Accountability is an important aspect within organizations and companies. Majority of companies look for accountability through various strategies and hence teams forms one of the strategies which the companies and organizations have been able to use(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). When employees are divided in to teams, it becomes easy for the management to make follow up and hold employees accountable for their duties and actions in the operations which they carry out. It is easy to identify where there are mistakes when employees are divided in to teams and hence reduces the amount of time that is used in identifying faults in people.            Teams help in enhancing accountability within organizations and this means that there are reduced cases of defaults within the company as well as improved performance(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). When employees know that their team will be held accountable for their part that they undertake in the operations of the company, they will strive to ensure that they succeed in the tasks which they have been assigned. Therefore, the view presented by Tom Peters is agreeable and teams should be promoted within companies. Time Management            Formation of teams within organizations helps in the management of time within organizations and companies. Teams are given specific duties and tasks to carry out of which they are needed to accomplish within specified time. Therefore, when the teams work together, it becomes easy for them to complete the task within the time frame provided hence ensuring that there is no wastage of time(Levi, 2011). The teams make use of time in an effective way hence improving the efficiency within the company since the teams are able to share the work load hence it is easy for the employees to carry out the assigned tasks. This shows that the suitable and best way that an organization can operate is through teams which can help save a lot of time within the company as well as motivate the employees to work hard and improve on their efficiency. Innovation and creativity            Organizations such as Google Inchave developed and continued to provide the best products in the market as a result of innovativeness within the company. This has been contributed to by the aspect of teamwork within the company. Another organization which has continued to benefit from team work is Apple Inc. This company has been able to produce quality products as a result of innovativeness of its teams. Therefore, when an organization or company puts its employees in teams, it provides them with the opportunity to work together and share ideas which lead to innovation(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011).            There is constant sharing of ideas among the employees which helps to enhance their ability to solve problems and come up with solutions as well as new ideas that will benefit the company. Innovativeness and creativity is important within organizations because it helps in the production of high quality products and services which meet the needs of the customers(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). When the customers are provided with high quality products or service through innovation, it means that an organization or a company will be able to increase its customer base as well as its revenue hence its profitability. Therefore, the view that has been presented by Tom Peters that organizations should be put in form of teams is agreeable based on the positive impact that it has on innovation and creativity within companies.            However, there are issues that affect the effectiveness of teams within organizations or companies. The difference that exists between employees, such as cultural diversity, often affects how teams function. It is quite a challenge to have a team that will put aside their cultural differences and work for the benefit of the company. There are employees that work well when assigned duties alone without having to work as a team(Levi, 2011). Therefore, it calls for the management of the company to realize that teams do not function all the time under every situation. There is need for proper analysis of the employees to find out if the idea of teams will work pout and generate the required and maximum results in the short and long run. Furthermore, it is to be noted that different organizations have different composition in terms of departments. Some of the departments cannot be organized in to teams due to the reason that they perform similar duties hence organizing them in to team will not change anything in their operations(Clegg, Kornberger, Pitsis, 2011). The differences in the employees create a challenge for the management within organizations when there is need to formulate teams for the purpose of sharing the workload that is available. Therefore, this could mean that teams may not seem as the suitable way to go in ensuring success within an organization or company. Conclusion            It is important to have teams within organizations since there is a lot of benefit which can be generated from having teams as part of operations in the company, hence the view presented by Tom Peters is agreeable. Organizations that have teams have greater benefits as compared to organizations or companies which have not organized their personnel in to teams that can collaborate for the benefit of all. Teams are important in enhancing accountability, time management, maximization of resources and minimization. Furthermore, it has been noted that teams helps in enhancing innovation and creativity within companies hence organizations are encouraged to organize their employees in to teams that are manageable. Sophocles Antigone - Creon and Antigone :: Antigone essays

Creon and Antigone Antigone   Sophocles   When a dictator dies, his image and fame dies with him, but when a self-sacrificing individual dies, their legacy begins.   This statement is true because oppressed citizens do not fondly mention a mean ruler, such as Creon from Antigone, after he passes away.   Yet a martyr, such as Antigone, also from the story Antigone, is remembered for her self-sacrificing deeds.   Creon will not be remembered because he did not allow Antigone to bury her dead brother Polynices, and decides to execute Antigone for trying while Antigone’s legacy will live on because she has the courage to defy Creon, and chooses to sacrifice herself for Polynices' honor.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   First, Creon is a tyrant.   His rule will not be remembered for many reasons, one being that he desecrates family honor.   When a son or father dies in battle, they are carried home to be properly buried by their families.   Eteocles, Antigone’s other dead brother, is a patriot and is buried because he fights for Thebes.   However, Polynices is not buried because he rebels against Thebes.   Creon leaves Polynices’ body out to be attacked by dogs and vultures.   This angers the people of Thebes because family honor is very important to them.   Therefore, the people of Thebes will not remember Creon because of his offensive deeds performed while he is on the throne.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Second, Creon will be forgotten because he decides to execute Antigone.   Her punishment is to be locked in a blocked cave until she dies.   Although later on in the story, Creon does decide to free her, it is too late.   The people of Thebes are astounded at the fact that Creon would even conceive of such a horrible punishment.   Antigone acted on family honor, which is understood. Therefore, his people will forget Creon.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Third, Antigone is a wonderful example of a martyr.   Her legacy will live on, and inspire many other rebels to stand up for their beliefs.   Antigone dared to defy the King’s threat of death to bury her brother, and shows true family pride.   The people take pity on Antigone, and feel that she should be let alone. Haemon, Creon's son and Antigone's betrothed, states how the people of Thebes feel. â€Å"On every side I hear voices of pity for this poor girl doomed to the cruelest death†¦for an honorable action-burying a brother who was killed in battle†¦has she not rather earned a crown of gold† (
